Dane Mills Bosley: An Overview by Congleton & Biddulph Chronicle newspaper.

Image
'Dane Mills Bosley' dates back to the mid-eighteenth century when the machinery was driven by water wheels, powered by water from the River Dane. Over the years, the Mills have been engaged in many different business activities including, Metallurgical, Textiles, Corn Milling & Organic Fibre Production. This book provides detailed information about the people and the industrial processes in place, at Dane Mills Bosley, during the 1960s, in a small village in rural Cheshire. Author Chris Pownall says “I trust this book will capture the culture of the Mills where I served my engineering apprenticeship between 1959 & 1966. It should appeal to those interested in social history as well as followers of our industrial heritage from a bygone era.” Ebook | Kobo | Google Play | Amazon Kindle | Apple iBook | Nook

A Review of 'A Long Journey Back' by Meggie Latham - Thame

Image
This book is a story of survival but unlike other similar works, I found its lack of sentimentality very pleasing. Chris gives a real picture of his struggle to cope with his son’s situation, not always as perfectly as he would have liked. He describes his struggle to work out how to behave in the face of something new and terrifying. It is a work about a parent’s worst nightmare, but Chris’s description of his experience of watching his son’s potential destruction and his fight back to a satisfying life, very different from his old one, is moving and gripping. The bravery and determination of the whole family, an ordinary and happy one until this tragedy, is amazing. It was refreshing that Chris attached no blame or criticism of the health care received and only thanks and appreciation for what happened. The insightful and honest ‘voices’ of both Chris and his son Rob, threading through the book kept me reading. I would recommend this book as an uplifting and inspiring book, even t

"Highly Recommended" - A Review by Ripperana Editor Nick Warren

Image
During the early 1990s, having got hold of copies of the original coverage of the case in the SUN newspaper from the library at Colindale, I professed myself an early 'Cutbushist.' In 2011 Thomas Cutbush remains a viable JTR suspect for at least three reasons, all uncovered when his Broadmoor Asylum file was released in November 2008. Firstly, he matches eye-witness descriptions: aged 22, 5ft 9.5 inches tall, eyes dark blue (very sharp), complexion dark. Secondly, his illness was ascribed to over-study, a common feature of Ripper suspects if a trifle lacking today. Finally, and most tellingly, attendants at the Asylum seem to have been assigned duties which involved spying on him. A night attendant called Bailey was listening outside Cutbush's window one night. Mr Bailey heard him say that if he had a knife suitable for the job he would rip up the attendants. Such eavesdropping confirms the long-held belief that staff at Broadmoor Asylum once suspected that they

Jack the Ripper, a clear and unbiased introduction to the case ...a Ripperologist review

Image
Jack the Ripper - Through the Mists of Time The Review* "Through the Mists of Time is an overview of the Ripper case written with the intention of clearing away the accretion of myth and fantasy that has obscured the facts, and it achieves this purpose admirably, Hodgson's enthusiasm and objectivity shining through . . . In Chapter 8 Hodgson takes account of some of the latest candidates to be the Ripper, such as Carl Feigenbaum, Robert Mann and Patricia Cornwell's advocacy of Walter Sickert. Information about Thomas Cutbush, gleaned from the Broadmoor files, is in the last chapter, and the chapter 'Jack in Films' briefly discusses From Hell. The number of illustrations has been increased and Stuart Hodgson, the author's son, evidently a talented artist, has produced some drawings of the victims. The hairstyles, particularly Kelly's, look a little too modern to me, but they are interesting pencil portraits of Nichols, Chapman, Eddowes and Kell

A book trailer for 'Jack the Ripper - Through the Mists of Time'

Image
Over a century ago a series of shocking mutilation murders took place in a squalid, overcrowded district of Victorian London. Five women fell victim to a man driven by rage and violent fantasy. The newspapers of the day gave him a chilling nickname, a name that evokes images of gas-lit foggy streets and a top-hatted sinister figure carrying a Gladstone bag. From the outset, the murderer attained almost mythical status merely by virtue of his name and his uncanny ability to avoid detection. The legend of Jack the Ripper was born. Book Savvy Spotlight on Peter Hodgson

Image
Bringing you exclusive interviews with authors featured in the Book Savvy Newsletter. Our Guest is Peter Hodgson * Enjoy the interview. Q1. Can you tell us about yourself and your book 'Jack the Ripper-Through the Mists of Time'? My Ripper book reflects a lifelong interest in the puzzle of the Ripper's identity. Since my days as a teenager I have been interested in true crime. It started after I read the Sherlock Holmes stories. If I could have my time back I would have joined the police force. The urge to solve crimes is embedded in my desire to write crime fiction. The real-life crimes of Jack the Ripper have been converted into films and fictional writings, and my book shows how the reality of those ghastly murders have been used by the entertainment industry. I have undertaken much research to make the book as accurate as possible. It is, I hope, a valuable contribution to a modern cultural myth. I would like to add that my son, Stuart, has created pencil por
