‘Insightful and Sensitive, for parents, carers, and professionals...'

The Review " Being unable to put it down, I read it at a sitting. Described as ‘insightful and sensitive’, this slender publication is designed ‘for parents, carers, and professionals who work with them’. As a parent and as a professional I have a thorough grasp of Maggie’s subject and can assure you that this small paperback is as good as anything I have read, and more readable than most. She speaks from the heart with a clear professional head. We know exactly what life’s journey has been for Em, from her early bereavement, through her further losses in childhood and adolescence, and, perhaps most importantly and optimistically, her painful road to recovery. Quite appropriately this is seen from the perspective of someone who believes in the significance of nurturing in human development, but no-one should underestimate Em’s inherent strengths.

Life in your 50s – how to deal with it!

Trauma - and how mature adults deal with it By  Seth Emmanuel Experiences and perspectives on life - love and marriage, divorce, politics, cancer, and other incredibly fascinating topics. Have you ever wondered why the younger generations make so many mistakes in life? The logical conclusion is that they haven’t gained the wisdom and experiences of more mature adults. When we reach middle-age we have the benefit of hindsight, acquired patience and thoughtfulness. We make decisions and approach life’s traumas in a non-emotional, considered way and we are all too well aware of the consequences of bad decisions. We are too seasoned to repeat the mistakes of youth. Wrong! Regardless of age, it seems we approach traumas in the same irrational and emotional state of our youth. The author also offers insights to those “in the middle” on how to deal with the traumas of life. A book that delivers some food for thought...

A review of 'OTOLI' by Theta Sigma, Resolution Corner blog.   "A book that delivers some food for thought... even for somebody who left school over twenty years ago." The Review Rating 4/5   "You know when you identify with a character in a book and say "I'm like him/her" or "I know what he/she feels like". Well, with this book I can genuinely say that to a point. I initially found out about this book due to the author, Bryony Allen, becoming a friend through Goodreads and I became interested in the book's theme of bullying. The reason for this is because I am a bullying "survivor" (I prefer to use this term rather than "victim") who was bullied physically, verbally and emotionally throughout primary and secondary school. The book is primarily seen through the third person points of view of main characters Alice and Keiran. Both characters are marginalised through bullying - Alice due to the actions of a

A collection of beautifully crafted and poignant poems

Image
'Teach us of Love' By  Henry Disney The verses are as challenging as ever, and they range over the poet’s varied experience and encounters with a diversity of people. This assortment of stirring verses are primarily concerned with musings about the author’s Christian faith–a faith which is less concerned with abstract doctrine than with living out the Gospel in every day living. Topics range from family life, human nature, politics and a variety of poignant situations. The verses are as challenging as ever, and they cover the poet’s varied experience and encounters with a diversity of people. These poems shine a critical, but compassionate, light on contemporary people and events. Author Henry Disney says in usual poetic fashion: “At times I've had a close exchange with death, But soon escaped to live again. I've met a rich array of men And women drawn from diverse walks Of life, both high and low. With some I've clashed. With most I've relis

A Grief Unobserved - a review by the Child Bereavement Charity

Image
Helping parents and carers with early childhood bereavement. The Review " This book charts the journey of a woman, through her childhood, into adolescence and finally adulthood after being bereaved by the death of her mother when very young.  Her early life is described as “a childhood of silence”, surrounded by adults who never talked about her mother’s death or offered any explanation as to what happened. The book describes the resultant emotional scars which this girl carried with her into adult life and the therapeutic process she embarked on to try to deal with them. It illustrates well the importance of adults being honest with young children when someone dies and the resultant damage to a child’s ability to make some sense of what has happened if an explanation is not given. A Grief Unobserved would be a helpful read for anyone who works with bereaved adults. It offers some insight into how childhood grief that is ignored can result in an adulthood blighted by th

A sensitive and insightful new book on helping children cope with bereavement

Image
A Grief Unobserved By Maggie Kindred There is a wonderful book by C S Lewis in which he describes the process of coming to terms with his bereavement - the 'grief observed' which most adults will experience at some time in their lives… this book is about the grief not observed, that of very young children. It is for parents, carers, and professionals who work with them. Very often the remaining parent, close relatives and well-meaning friends, are understandably so involved with their own grief that they try to sweep the child's problem under the carpet. They can regard apparent lack of reaction in the child with relief, rather than as a danger signal. “This book is essentially practical - it is meant to make 'therapy' an everyday concept, so avoids jargon and theoretical language where possible.” says Author Maggie Kindred.
