The story plots the fear, struggle and bravery of three close families and the local Vicar in a small town in the New Forest; as their faith and beliefs are tested to the full by the release of the incarcerated demonic Gorgones from ancient Greek times. The friends must save their town and the multitudes; who inadvertently are ready to take an icy step to oblivion.

Book Savvy Spotlight on Nicola Burgher-Kennedy

Bringing you exclusive interviews with authors featured in the Book Savvy Newsletter.
Our Guest is Nicola Burgher-Kennedy*
Enjoy the interview.

Q1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your book 'The Creator's Diet'?
I'm a public health nutritionist with approximately 15 years experience. I'm resident nutritionist on Premier Christian Radio Station, a wife, mother and a Christian. The book is a result of much research and provides a summary of the biblical principles on nutrition to help individuals make the best food choices for their health and ultimately their destinies.

Q2. Tell us how you became a nutritionist?
I actually never set out to be a nutritionist but rather was going down the doctor route. But then in a final module of my first degree which was nutrition related, I changed directions to study nutrition.

Q3. What made you write this book?
So many things really, but primarily my father's death from prostate cancer and the incidence of ill health in the church. Also a realisation of the effect good nutrition can have on improving the quality of a person's life.

Local author's book signing at Sherborne St John Village Hall.

Peter Good will be signing copies of his novel, Ndlovu - The White Elephant, a pacy story set in Zimbabwe. Peter hopes that many of the Sherborne St. John residents and visitors, will come out to support their 'local author', and of course obtain a book.

Date: Saturday, 21 July 2012
Time: 10:00 - 12:00
Address: Sherborne St John Village Hall, Elm Road, Basingstoke, RG24 9HP

Ndlovu – The White Elephant is a pacy story set in Zimbabwe during the turbulent years that followed Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence. The story highlights the dangers of police work in the explosive climate of a troubled country during years of the terror war and  is woven around human suffering, painful endurance, and horrors that confronted the peoples both black and white. The narrative is loosely based upon the author’s own experiences in the police force of what was then Rhodesia. Thus the action of his story is set against an authentic background which the author experienced and the impeccable writing style gives a palpable vividness to the events.

Peter Good is the author of Ndlovu - The White Elephant!

We wish Peter the very best with this event.

Neal James has been interviewed by Tracie McBride, Exquisite Corpse.

Q 1. You’re making an elevator pitch to your favourite movie director. Who is it? Which of your books are you going to pitch? Who do you envisage playing the lead roles? And what are you going to say?
This has to be Spielberg, and I’d pitch ‘The Rings of Darelius’. It’s a sci-fi epic still in manuscript form, and I’d give him the ‘heads up’ on its publication.
Lead roles would have to be people like Patrick Stewart as Admiral Charles Devereaux, Daniel Ratcliffe as John Bains, the hero, Michael Dorm as Maddran Chakk – it could go on forever, but I’d need actors experienced in the fantasy/sci-fi genres.
What would I say? Well, bearing in mind that he’s heard it all before, and that I would literally have minutes to do the thing, it could be something like
'Remember when you were an unknown and looking or that big break? Here’s my chance to pitch mine to you.’

How To Get Book Reviews Without Spending (Too Much) Money

By Joanna Penn*

I believe that book reviews are critical for sales. They are up there with writing a great book and using pro editors and cover designers.

If you can get great reviews, you will make sales and they definitely impact the Amazon algorithms. I also believe in writing reviews for books I like – a little review karma comes in handy! In today’s guest post, short story author Ken Brosky shares his tips for places to get reviews.

There’s no better way to generate buzz for your books than to get some positive reviews. Heck, even negative reviews can generate some buzz! But how do you go about getting those reviews, and what should you pay?

Is it worth paying for reviews?
That all depends on your goals. While there are some major book review services that provide reviews at a fee (Kirkus and Foreword are the most popular), that fee might be out of your price range. Are you willing to spend $400 to get a book review from one of the biggest and most respected book reviewers in the business? Keep in mind it’s not necessarily a good review, either. It’s an honest review of your work, and it’s coming from tough reviewers.

More importantly, there might not be any benefit to this. Book sales probably won’t magically increase after a review by Kirkus or Foreword is published. What you can do is show other people the review to convince them to buy your book, which can be important. “Here,” you can say, “look. Someone thinks the book is good! So buy a copy why don’t you?”

7 Ways to Get Your Book Reviewed

By Dana Lynn Smith*

The words “book review” often conjure up images of pre-publication reviews in major review journals like Publishers Weekly or Library Journal, but there are a variety of places to get book reviews throughout the life cycle of a book. Here are some examples:

1. Endorsements
Endorsements are recommendations solicited from subject experts, authors, celebrities and other well-known people prior to publication, and they are often used on the book cover and interior.

2. Critical Reviews
Traditional critical reviews appear in media such as book review journals, newspapers, literary magazines and other publications. These reviews may include a brief overview of the book and discuss what the reviewer liked (or didn’t like) about the book.

3. Customer Reviews and Testimonials
Often people who enjoy reading a particular book will post a review or a brief testimonial (recommendation) on sites like Amazon, Goodreads or Facebook, or even write a note to the author.
A customer review is a little longer than a testimonial and focuses more on the content of the book, rather than just recommending it. Hint: be sure to encourage customers to provide testimonials and reviews and make it easy for them.
