Self harm and mutilation - Dancing in the Rain: the Final Cut

Self mutilation has sometimes been quoted as the “new anorexia” with a reported 2 million cases in the US alone. It is estimated that one out of every 200 teen girls between the ages of 13 and 19 regularly practice self-harming behaviour. These numbers are staggering. Many teenagers have some issues they are dealing with; be it cutting, burning, depression, anorexia, bulimia, or suicide, these are all just part of life.

Tara Nicole shares her experience of cutting and tells her story of self harm and mutilation. She shares how she triumphed over this habit and reveals her passion to reach out and help other teenagers and young people.

  1. The author tells her story via diary entries, and as the reader, you really do feel like you are privy to the main character's innermost thoughts, fears, and feelings. For a topic that is difficult to talk about, the author's casual style makes it accessible. For a problem that is hard to understand, this book provides frank insights into why a loved, intelligent, promising young woman would turn to self-mutilation for comfort. I have given this book to every teenage girl I know, and plan to share it with my daughters someday.
